David himself is inspired by authors from both the past and the current era. J.R.R. Tolkien is a huge influence, not only in the genre, but in the depth of his world building. Brandon Sanderson and Terry Brooks inspire his modern approach to story-telling while also adding depth to his characters and helping explore more of the fantasy genre. Robert Jordan's expansive Wheel of Time universe and wild characters has also inspired David.

While learning from those who have written before him, David also looks to the future. As he writes he attempts to create stories that appeal to the modern reader both in theme and in the linguistic choices he makes.
